Doctor Jean-Philippe Vert (Ecole des Mines de Paris)

After graduating from Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole des Mines in Paris (France), Jean-Philippe Vert received his PhD in mathematics from Paris 6 University in 2001. He then worked for 18 month in Kyoto University's Bioinformatics Center (Japan) before joining Ecole des Mines de Paris (France) in 2002 as a bioinformatics group leader. He has been director of the Center for Computational Biology at Ecole des Mines de Paris since 2006. Dr. Vert's research focuses on the development of statistical and machine learning approaches to analyze and model biological data.

[Abstract of the invited talk]

We survey the foundations of kernel methods and the recent developments of kernels for variable-length strings, in the context of biological sequence analysis.
